Bette Davis as Margo Channing in All About Eve

All About Eve is number 28 on the AFI 100.  It’s about a popular but aging Broadway actress named Margo Channing and a young “fan” named Eve Harrington who maneuvers her way into her life and threatens both her career and her personal relationships.

Betty Davis plays Margo Channing, who everyone adores despite the fact that she acts like a total diva.  Her performance in this film is outstanding.  The thing that stood out to me was her acting subtleties.  She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for this role.

Anne Baxter plays Eve Harrington, a young woman that totally idolizes Margo and becomes her assistant.  She was also nominated for Best Actress for this film.

This movie is full of wonderful and dynamic scenes where the actors really got the opportunity to play off each other.  The writing and the dialogue were fun and witty.  The whole dinner party sequence, in which Margot is completely convinced that Eve is up to no good but has a house full of guests to host, was particularly enjoyable to watch.

The dinner party was also cool because a young woman, relatively unknown at the time, named Marilyn Monroe, gets a chance to shine playing in the small roll of an aspiring actress named Miss Casswell.

I really liked how the film was constructed.  The beginning section involves an awards ceremony that provides some foreshadowing, but what’s wonderful is that I had no idea how it was going to unfold.

To this day, this is the only film to have four actresses nominated for acting Oscars (Betty Davis and Anne Baxter for Best Actress, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress).  The entire cast is fantastic.

I really enjoyed this film.  The story was great, the acting was superb, and the writing was smart and fun.  All About Eve was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 6 of them, including Best Picture.  This is a wonderful movie that everyone should watch.  I can’t wait to see it again.
