Eaten The Tortilla Soup From Chilango

Chilango is a restaurant on 235 Church Street (at Market), and their tortilla soup is #43 on the 2011 7x7 Big Eat List

They pride themselves on the quality of their ingredients (fresh, organic, grass-fed, free-range, etc.).  The word “Chilango” is Mexican slang for a person living in or around Mexico City, and the recipes used that comprise their menu try to reflect this authentic Mexican flavor.

Besides the fact that the tortilla soup is on the list, I wanted to try this place because they use good ingredients.  Grass-fed beef is a selling point for me to try a restaurant.  So, I picked up some of their food and brought it home.

I ordered duck flautas, filet mignon tacos, rock cod tacos, and huarache chilango (oval tortillas topped with beef short ribs, refried beans, sour cream, cotija cheese, and salsa verde).

I thought this food tasted good but not great.  It think it needed a bit more seasoning.  The tortilla soup, on the other hand, was fantastic.  It had spice, chunks of avocado, a good amount of chicken, and cheese.  One thing it had that I don’t normally expect in tortilla soup was potatoes, but the combination of everything together was delicious.  They make their own tasty tortilla strips as well.

I would like to try more food from this restaurant again, but I can definitely recommend the tortilla soup.  I would go back just for that.
