Today, I continued testing the waters of strongman at San Francisco CrossFit.  If you’ve ever watched The World’s Strongest Man competition, you may be familiar with farmer carries, carrying heavy weights in each hand.

The farmer carry is similar to the yoke walk, except that it severely tested my grip.  I started with 100 pounds on each bar, and I was able to carry this without much problem.

I loaded it up to 150 pounds on each hand and took it 75 feet.  HEAVY!!!

The most surprising part for me was how difficult it was on my quads.  I totally expected the forearms to give me trouble, but as I was walking, the front of my legs just burned!

The farmer carry is a great and functional exercise.  It tests core, hips, legs, and grip strength, and it requires not only the dynamics of walking but also the mental fortitude to not set the weight down.

When I think about all the times I’ve carried grocery bags or luggage in each hand, it’s so easy to remind myself the usefulness of this kind of workout.
