Seen A Colony Of Crabs

"So if anybody wants to get me something, get me 60 crabs - one for each year. I don't want no diamonds, I don't want no shoes, I don't want no party. I want some crabs."
--Patti LaBelle
I was going to say that I'd never been to the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center before where my nephew Micah had his 4th birthday party today, but this was so delightfully disgusting that I had to post on it. We've passed by the Interpretive Center tons of times, but never knew what it was. The reason it's noticeable is that it looks like a house on top of a swamp. Actually, that kind of is what it is.
Located right off the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge, this place has nature programs for kids, so it was ideal for a children's party. During the party, they showed the kids some snails and some crabs from the surrounding swamp.
After the party, we cleaned up, and when we were waiting to leave, we saw where these little guys come from. They were all underneath the building.
Yes, all those little critters are crabs. It was gross and incredible at the same time.
Here's what a few looked like up close.
What I really liked about the party was that it taught kids about the nature that's around them. It was educational and entertaining. Sometimes things in nature can be both beautiful and disgusting at the same time. By themselves, the crabs are not so bad, but as a huge group/nest/colony, they're totally gross.
