Eaten Lunch At Skywalker Ranch
"If there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from."
--Luke Skywalker as played by Mark Hamill in Star Wars: A New Hope
This week, our friend Jing was visiting us from Singapore. Creature genius James Tooley thought it would be a good idea to take her up to the Ranch for lunch, and since I have not been there for a meal yet, we thought this was a nice opportunity to make a trip up there.
Skywalker Ranch is a 5,000 acre ranch in Nicasio, not far from San Rafael. Despite the fact that there is a Fourth of July barbecue here every year, the only time I had ever visited was when I had a job interview for Lucasfilm Animation in December 2005. In the nearly six years I've worked for a Lucasfilm company, I had never been back to the Ranch.
Thanks to my co-worker and fellow Giants fan Eric Wong for driving up there from work in the rain, we made it to the ranch's Main House.
Before we toured the place, we ate lunch where I had an ossobuco with root vegetables and broccoli.
After lunch, we walked around the house, which had some of the most incredible rooms and hallways in it. There were things as old as an antique Steinway piano and as new as the crystal skull from the fourth Indiana Jones movie. The decor was really impressive.
The research library was so cool, and it was topped with a colorful, stain glass dome.
Adjacent to library is a beautiful courtyard area where they can have catered events from time to time.
All around the ranch, there are rows and rows of grapevines. I guess the wine is selling fairly well.
We paid a visit to the Tech Building where a lot of the employees on this campus work.
The property also has a small lake called Ewok Lake.
I had a good time. I wish I had more time to explore the various areas on the very large property. I think I'm going to try to make it out to the barbecue next year.
